How do I setup WPA wireless security

There are a couple of steps involved with setting up wireless security on your network. First off you will have to configure your Billion and also configure your wireless client with matching settings so that it can connect to it. It is recommended that you configure the Billion’s wireless security while connected with a Ethernet cable/wired connection as when you apply the wireless security settings you will lose wireless connection, preventing you from making further changes until your wireless client is configured appropriately and has logged back into the wireless network. This guide was done using a 7300G however all new modems should have the same fields just arranged with a slight difference.

Setting up the Billion
Open your web browser and go to the configuration page of the billion (by default this is at
http://192.168.1.254)

on the left hand menu browse to Configuration -> LAN -> Wireless security

from the security mode box select either WPA or WPA2 (some old devices wont support WPA2)

You will now have to enter a Shared Key. This is the key that you will have to enter into your wireless clients for them to connect. Make it something that you are able to remember but it is also important that it isn't easy for people to guess. The key must be made up of 8 to 63
ASCII characters or 64 HEX numbers

Once you have entered your your key press the apply button. If your key is valid the modem will apply those settings. If the key doesn't meet the character requirements you will be shown an error message and will have to try a different key.

Setting up a Windows Client

The process to configure your client changes depending on the wireless card and software that you are running. Most are similar so this can be used as a general guide but you won’t be able to follow it word for word. Most notebook computers that have built in wireless have either a hardware switch or a function key that can turn the wireless off and on. This will have to be switched on for you to see any wireless networks

Right click on the wireless icon in your system tray and select view available wireless networks

You should see your network and it should say that security is enabled. Select the network you wish to connect to and then select Connect

You will be asked to enter your Key (the same one that you entered into the billion) twice to confirm you got it correct

Your computer should then be able to connect to your wireless network. The network key will be saved in your computer so you shouldn't have to enter it in again unless something is changed
